In Victorian times, a "hair receiver" was a small, decorative container used to collect and store hair clippings and locks of hair from family members and loved ones. These containers were typically made of various materials, including porcelain, glass, metal, or wood, and they often had ornate designs or intricate detailing.

The purpose of a hair receiver was to preserve sentimental tokens of affection and remembrance. During the Victorian era, hair was seen as a symbol of love, friendship, and familial ties, and it was common for people to exchange locks of hair as tokens of affection. Hair could be collected from various sources, such as a beloved spouse, child, or deceased family member. This hair would then be carefully placed inside the hair receiver.
